Off to a great start! This is day 2 of my blogging marathon: “7 Days of Healthy Eating Out.” Read the details on this marathon here.
I ordered Chinese takeout at lunch today and was loving how it took only 15 minutes for the delivery to show up at my door. I ordered steamed shrimp and mixed vegetables (broccoli, mushrooms, onion, carrot, baby corn, celery) with brown rice. If you look at any Chinese takeout menu, you can usually find a section of healthy or vegetarian dishes. Look for steamed meats or tofu and lots of vegetables. If they don’t specify brown rice, just ask for it. It is very common these days. I also ordered an egg drop soup that’s made with chicken broth, eggs, green onions, salt, and a little sesame oil. Even though I ordered small sizes of all my dishes, I have leftovers to save for dinner. Plus all the food only cost me $7 plus tip. That’s a major steal when I can make at least two meals out of it. It was cheap, easy, and yes…healthy.
Tips: Other healthy options at Chinese restaurants include hot & sour soup, steamed or stir-fried vegetables and meats, vegetable dumplings, and curry mixed vegetables. Avoid deep fried meats, fried rice, and sweet & sour chicken or shrimp (loaded with sugar). Again, look for the steamed menu choices and you’ll be good to go. I often ask for sauces on the side too so I can control how much goes into my food. For the free packets of sauce you get with every order, stick with soy sauce and hot sauce. Avoid duck sauce and sweet & sour (sugar traps). Ideally, you can use your own soy sauce and hot sauce you have at home. The packets often have more preservatives and chemicals.

The steamed shrimp, vegetables, and brown rice looks really good!
Thanks! It was tasty and I just had the leftovers for dinner.
Maybe it’s just my bad luck, but whenever I order egg drop soup it tastes very plain. Like having yellow tap water :/
Hi Ezmelts. Sorry to hear about your soups! The restaurant may not be putting enough salt or green onions in there to season it. Still, some more flavorful healthy choices include hot & sour soup and anything brothy with vegetables (versus something cheesy or creamy).
