Ever since I moved to New York, I’ve been blazing through books. I have lots of spare reading time when I take the subway to dance class, the gym, or my favorite health food stores. So, the latest book I read is called Women, Food, and God by Geneen Roth. I had the opportunity to hear Geneen speak in person last year when I was training at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, and she was one of the most memorable speakers. Geneen’s new book has been receiving a lot of press lately, with a big appearance on The Oprah Show, so I added it to my summer reading list.
If you’ve ever had trouble with emotional eating, had an eating disorder, struggled with weight gain/loss, or suffered in any way with your relationship with food…I recommend this book. For me, I know I’ve come a long way. I’m currently a nutrition and wellness blogger and writer, a certified health coach, and someone who spends A LOT of time in the grocery store and experimenting in the kitchen. Food is a huge part of my life. With all of this, I still have my moments. I have to work through my cravings and try not to beat myself up if I have an off-day or make a bad choice when I’m stressed or overworked. I don’t have all the answers, and I don’t think I ever will. I only hope that I can continue to share what I do know and offer suggestions on what’s worked for me (such as my healthy love affair with raw chocolate). Women, Food, and God is rich with new insights, and I found myself writing down notes after every page.
What I love about this book is she gets to the point that it’s about so much more than the food. Here’s one of my favorite quotes from the chapter called Being Hot Fudge Sundaes: “The most challenging part of any system that addresses weight-related issues is that unless it also addresses the part of you that wants something you can’t name—the heart of your heart, not the size of your thighs—it won’t work…Spiritual hunger can never be solved on the the physical level.” (176-177)
Here’s a link to purchase Geneen’s book on Amazon: Women, Food, and God by Geneen Roth. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did.

Thanks for the review. I’ve been thinking about checking that book out but never got around to looking into yet.
Thanks for the recommendation – this sounds like exactly the book I need to read.
Thanks for bringing this book to my attention. So many great books get overlooked just because they are not on the bestseller list.
Your review is quite intriguing. I’m going to look at this book closer.
