Homemade Taco Seasoning

Did you know that adding spices to your foods is one of the easiest ways to make them more nutritious? Of course, spices provide a ton of flavor, but they also have great anti-aging and disease-fighting benefits. Some spices even act as a natural appetite suppressant! Check out this Huff Post article about the healthy benefits of herbs and spices.

I made tacos over the weekend with ground chicken breast. Lately I am always craving spicy tacos. When I was at the store I looked at one of those taco seasoning packets to see what the ingredients were. There were a few things I didn’t want in there (like corn syrup), so I decided to make my own seasoning. It was really easy, and I had enough spices at home that I didn’t need to buy anything new. Here’s what I put in (approximately):

2 tbsp. Mexican chili powder
1 tbsp. crushed red pepper flakes
1 tbsp. cumin
1 tbsp. paprika
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. pepper

I combined all the spices in a bowl and mixed them together with a fork. Then I added enough of the mixed spices to cover the ground chicken breast and saved the leftover spices for another day. Before I cooked the chicken, I sauteed some garlic, onion, and green bell pepper in a big pan over medium heat for about 5-10 minutes. Then I added the chicken to the pan and broke it apart with a spoon until all the pieces were cooked through.

We ate our seasoned taco meat in crispy shells with pinto beans, lettuce, and a quick salsa made with tomato, avocado, lime juice, and fresh cilantro. Plus, we drizzled a little sriracha hot sauce on top. Ooh baby!

Oh yeah! We’ve been making our own, too, and it’s much cheaper (and greener) than buying those little envelopes.

Perfect timing! My husband just told me he didn’t like the “Taco Seasoning” I’ve been buying. I’ve been meaning to look for a recipe.
