New Blueberry Research

by laurel on July 5, 2009

Update: This post was featured on the “Health Fitness How To” blog on July 13th.

University of Michigan scientists recently presented their new preliminary study in the Experimental Biology convention. They found that a low fat, blueberry-rich diet will help reduce belly fat, cholesterol levels, total body weight, and the total amount of fat in your blood. Previous research studies found that the antioxidants in blueberries help keep fat out of your blood stream. (Ref: Body + Soul Magazine, July/August 2009, p. 33). For more on this research, check out NaturalNews (one of my favorite holistic health sites).

Take advantage of the abundance of fresh blueberries available right now. They’re also cheaper than any other time in the year!

I love blueberries but here in New Zealand it’s winter so I can only get frozen berries which don’t taste half as yummy. We eat heaps of blueberries in December/January but it’s such a shame the season is so short before the quality drops and the prices rise. Perhaps it’s better in the USA?

Hi Cindy,
Thanks for your comment.

I know frozen berries aren’t AS great, but they do carry wonderful nutritional value. Since they’re not as yummy to eat by the handful, try frozen berries in smoothies, pancakes, muffins, etc.

You can experiment with different brands of frozen berries too. I’m not sure what you have in New Zealand, but I know in the U.S. there is a big difference in quality among the brands of frozen fruits.

Good luck!
Laurel :)

One of my favorite (and VERY healthy) ways to enjoy blueberries with with this >a href=”http://kitchencaravan.com/recipe/blueberry-flax-seed-paste-a-breakfast-spread”> Blueberry Flax Seed Paste. It makes an absolutely delicious breakfast spread and between the aforementioned benefits of blueberries and the omega-3’s in flax, you really just can’t go wrong.

Over the last few years, I’ve made it a point to incorporate blueberries into my diet. Of course that was done with many changes in my eating, but its made a tremendous difference in my quality of life.

Blueberries have a diverse range of micronutrients, with notably high levels of the essential dietary mineral manganese, vitamin B6, vitamin C, vitamin K and dietary fiber. One serving provides a relatively low glycemic load score of 4 out of 100 per day.
