Cancer-Busting Berries

This weekend I was reading one of my favorite magazines Body + Soul, and I stumbled on some new research about berries. In a study published in the Cancer Research journal, scientists found that potent compounds in berries could help stop cancer at very early stages. When researchers fed rats a diet high in black raspberries, “more than 20 percent of carcinogen-damaged genes returned to normal activity.” (Body + Soul, Dec. 2008, p. 30)

If fresh berries are too expensive or unavailable where you shop, check the frozen section. They can help you save money and will provide the same health benefits. Karen Collins, R.D. from the American Institute for Cancer Research says that the minerals, antioxidants, and phytochemicals in berries help increase enzyme production in our body. The enzymes help remove harmful carcinogens. In addition to berries, Collins says we should eat a variety of cancer-fighting foods to get the best cancer prevention. Increase your intake of dark green leafy vegetables, tomatoes, whole grains, and legumes.
