Research Roundup
Here’s a summary of some recent research on eating for your health:
A study from the University of South Florida in Tampa found that food is very important to the body when trying to fight off illness. In a mice study, researchers concluded that reducing food intake by 30% made the immune system less effective at fighting off germs. (Self Magazine, Sep. 2008, p. 128)
A study from the University of Liverpool found that pine nut oil extract can reduce appetite, increase satiety, and reduce total calorie intake. Researchers gave a free fatty acid (FFA) form of pine nut oil extract to 45 overweight women a half hour before they eat lunch. The women who took the pine nut oil extract eat 7% fewer calories and less food overall than women who were given an olive oil placebo supplement. Some earlier research found that Korean pine nut oil increases a hormone in the gut (cholecystokinin) that makes you feel full.
A Nutrition journal study found the drinking green tea after an intense workout may help you recover faster. Researchers found that drinking three cups a day cut down on cell damage caused by resistance exercise. (Self, Sep. 2008, p. 128) I like to mix some green tea with water to take to the gym or anytime on the go. If I don’t have time to make some fresh, my favorite bottled brand is Teas Tea. It’s all natural, unsweetened, and has the best fresh taste. I get two-liter bottles from Target or Whole Foods.
