Study on Asthma and Passion Fruit Peel

by laurel on July 7, 2008

A Nutrition Research study found that asthmatics (people with asthma) who took 150 mg of passion fruit peel extract reported a whopping 76% reduction in coughing and 81% reduction in wheezing. Lead author on the study Ronald Ross Watson, Ph.D says the passion fruit peel extract helps reduce inflammation that causes your airways to be restricted. Watson also said, “we now have two scientific publications indicating passion fruit has a beneficial effect on two very common but very different human diseases – hypertension and asthma – and that’s very exciting.” A parallel study also found that asthmatics who took the extract had a significant reduction in blood pressure.

I did a little researching online and I wasn’t able to find any passion fruit peel extract to buy, but I’m sure it will be available soon. When there is promising research like this, I can’t see why the vitamin and supplement companies wouldn’t want to sell it. If you know a company that sells it, let me know and I’ll share it with the other readers. In the meantime, I wonder if it would be easy enough to blend some passion fruit peel into a smoothie?

Thanks. Fruit flies are also attracted to rotting bananas, potatoes, onions and other unrefrigerated produce purchased at the grocery store. Fruit flies can be a problem year round, but are especially common during late summer/fall because they are
attracted to ripened or fermenting fruits and vegetables.

The extract of the peel of passion fruit is more or less the same as the active component in red wine: bioflavanoids (OPC: oligomeric pro anthocyanids from Jack Masquelier). You can already buy it but it is (too) expensive. It’s much better, healthier and cheaper to throw each day a whole piece of passion fruit in the blender together with some other juice. Make sure it has a purple skin because its the purple part what is effective.
