The American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) reports that whole foods, not supplements, are most effective in lowering your risk of cancer. To come to this conclusion, the ACIR reviewed over 7,000 studies on diet, physical activity, weight, and cancer risk.
In about 50 separate supplement studies reviewed, some supplements provided cancer protection, some provided no protection, and some were found to increase cancer risk. Results were very inconsistent when it came to supplements and cancer protection.
However, ACIR looked at over 440 studies on cancer risk and vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients in foods. The research proved to be far more consistent, and the ACIR panel came up with a few categories of nutrients that offer specific cancer protection. I added some specific foods packed with these nutrients to help you out.

ACIR also concluded that non-starchy vegetables, allium vegetables (onions, leeks, garlic), and fruits offer protection against seven different cancers.

Thanks for the props! I’m a big fan of the Mediterranean diet too. Actually, I did a post on it awhile back. A study found that children who eat Mediterranean diets are less likely to have problems with allergies and asthma!
