Earth Day Challenge: Eat an Organic Meal

Happy Earth Day! On this holiday, my challenge is for all of us to eat at least one organic meal or food item today. EarthDinner.org wrote these strong points that make the case for organic food:

  • “Buying foods grown and distributed locally supports the local farmers, allowing them and their families to stay on the land.”
  • “Buying foods that were grown using sustainable agricultural practices protects the soil and environment in countless ways.”
  • “Going organic ensures that you are feeding your loved ones foods that are free from pesticides, hormones and antibiotics, as well as the added knowledge that the animals were treated with respect and care throughout their lives.”

Also, consider a few inspirational quotes I found:

  • “The act of putting into your mouth what the earth has grown is perhaps your most direct interaction with the earth.” -Frances Moore Lappe
  • “Have you noticed that eating organic food can make you feel more vital, and that the taste is cleaner and more flavorful?” -Joshua Rosenthal, Integrative Nutrition

Here are a few ideas for your organic meal on this Earth Day:

  • Frozen mealAmy’s Kitchen is a family-owned company that sells delicious natural, organic, and vegetarian frozen meals. You can find them at Walmart, Publix, Target, Whole Foods, and many other grocery stores. My favorites are the Pesto Tortellini Bowl and the Black Bean Vegetable Enchiladas.
  • Classy meal — Try ChefMD’s recipe for “Seared Sea Scallops with Organic Spinach and Toasted Pistachios.”
  • Smoothie — Buy some organic milk, yogurt, and frozen fruit. Blend together for a light meal or snack.
  • Alcohol — Enjoy a glass of organic wine or beer with dinner.
  • Stir-fry — Pick up some organic chicken or beef and fry it up in a sauté pan with whatever organic vegetables you can find at your grocery store.

Great list of benefits for choosing organic. Also, did you know that organic fruits and vegetables usually last longer than conventionally grown produce? Weird but true, considering all the preservatives they spray on conventionally grown produce. Go figure!
