Proud to be an Egghead

The most recent “Smart Fuel” on Mark’s Daily Apple is eggs. One egg has 5.5 grams of protein, only 68 calories, and 9 essential amino acids. But, that’s just the beginning. Read on for all the benefits of eating eggs:

  • Choline - Your body only produces a limited amount of this B vitamin, and as a result, 90% of Americans are deficient. Choline is important for the overall health and function of your brain
  • Protein for weight loss - Last year LSU promoted eggs as a great food for weight loss because the high protein contenthelps keep you full throughout the day
  • Selenium - Eggs are packed with selenium which may help prevent cancer (especially prostate cancer)
  • Lutein and Zeaxanthin - These carotenoids keep your eyes healthy and reduce your risk of cataracts and macular degeneration
  • Vitamin D - As one of the only natural food sources of vitamin D, one serving of eggs offers 10% of your RDI
  • Sulfur, other vitamins and minerals - Eating eggs may keep your hair and nails healthy while encouraging growth

As Mark’s Daily Apple pointed out, you’ve probably heard some negative press about eggs, like the notion that they’re a cholesterol nightmare. But, a study from the Harvard School of Public Health found that eating eggs on a regular basis might prevent stroke, blood clots, and heart attack.
