Natural Antioxidant Selectively Kills Leukemia Cells

by laurel on May 3, 2007

The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center reports that their School of Medicine researchers found a natural antioxidant that kills leukemia cells without harming healthy cells.  Anthocyanidins are antioxidants found in fruits, vegetables, and red wine.  Researchers looked at a common anthocyanidin, C-3-R, which they extracted from black raspberries.  A high concentration of C-3-R killed all leukemia cells in 18 hours of treatment.  Anthocyanidins show promise to be used as a highly effective treatment for leukemia.
