Omega-3 and Vitamin D Lower Risk of Blindness

The Marc Joseph Nutrition Blog reports on two studies from the Archives of Opthalmology that show higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D consumption lower the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) (or the common cause of blindness for age 50+).

The first study found that people with the highest omega-3 fat intake were 39% less likely to develop AMD (compared with those having the lowest intake). The second study found that people with the highest vitamin D intake were 36% less likely to develop AMD (compared with those haivng the lowest intake).

Your best bet is to incorporate omega-3 fats and vitamin D into your diet every day, especially when you are young and healthy. Marc Joseph’s Nutrition Blog said, “the best time to take action is well before you develop symptoms, as AMD takes years to develop and process.”
