by laurel on April 18, 2007

Vicki Koenig, MS, RD, CDN from Stonyfield.com reports that healthy nutrition and lifestyle choices can prevent or slow tumor growth in the early stages of colon cancer.  She says that colon cancer is the third most common cancer (for men and women) in our country, however, “70% of colon cancer is preventable.”

Some factors that reduce the incidence of colon cancer are:

  • diets high in calcium and dairy
  • diets high in Vitamin D and folate
  • lots of probiotics, fiber, and exercise

Some factors that increase the risk of colon cancer are

  • diets high in fats from animal sources, obesity

Alcoholism is a term with multiple and sometimes conflicting definitions.
In common and historic usage, alcoholism refers to any condition that results in the continued consumption of alcoholic beverages despite the health problems and negative social consequences it causes.
