Women’s Health Magazine reports that fish is the #1 food for women. Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian, M.D., says that “the benefits of fish are well established, while the risks are overblown.” To make it easy for us, the magazine listed twenty of the most popular seafoods in the U.S. and ranked them based on omega-3 content, toxin levels, and other nutritional benefits in a three ounce serving. Here are a few standouts from the list:
- #1 Salmon – the clear nutritional winner with 3X the daily dose of omega-3s, low mercury levels, and 72% of daily dose of selenium (avoid farmed salmon)
- #2 Rainbow trout – one gram of omega-3s, low mercury levels, 2X the daily dose of B12, half the daily dose of niacin (lowers LDL cholesterol, boosts metabolism)
- #3 Oysters – almost no mercury, 1.2 grams of omega-3s, 2X the daily dose of zinc (avoid wild eastern and american oysters)
