Avocados Packed With Healthy Fats

by laurel on April 23, 2007

Cooking Light Magazine writes that 26 of the 30 grams of fat in an avocado are heart-healthy, unsaturated fats that can increase your levels of HDL (good) cholesterol. These healthy fats help the body absorb vital fat-soluble nutrients such as vitamins A, E and beta-carotene.

A study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journalin 2010 found that combining a vegetarian diet while replacing 13% of carbohydrates with healthy monounsaturated fats from sunflower oil and avocados helps boost the levels of HDL cholesterol levels. Study author Dr. David Jenkins said that this combination of healthy fats and a vegetarian diet “did exactly the thing you want” in regards to cholesterol levels.

Wonderful post as always Laurel! Avacodos are also rich in glutathione, a strong antioxidant that in addition to having value in cancer prevention, may help treat viral hepatitis as well. Thanks for your easy to understand, easy to apply ideas to keep us healthy!
