Philadelphia Joins NYC to Ban Trans Fats
MSNBC.com reports that Philadelphia approved, and is expected to sign, a ban on trans fats in restaurants. The ban will make Philadelphia the second city in the U.S. to ban the atery clogging fat (New York City was the first). Philadephia restaurants will be prohiited from frying foods with trans fats or serving spreads with trans fat. In September of next year, trans fats wil also be banned in all food prepared by Philadelphia eateries. At this time, there are no penalities in place for non-compliance.
Trans fats increase LDL cholesterol (”bad cholesterol”) and lower HDL cholesterol (”good cholesterol”) which increases the risk for coronary heart disease.
